Competition terms and conditions
Submission requirements
The “Climate from Space” competition organised by the ESA Climate Office shall accept contributions from natural persons who are established artists as well as emerging artists. No legal entity either in its own name or in the name of another entity or natural person shall be entitled to submit a competition entry. The submission shall be made via this website and shall constitute a preview of the work that the artist intends to produce, during the time he or she will spend working with the ESA Climate Office, if he or she is the winner of the competition. The final artwork shall be exhibited and installed at the occasion of the LPS in May 2019. Each competition entry must be an original artwork created by the artist. The artist shall warrant that the artwork does not in any way copy, reproduce, plagiarise or otherwise compromise, violate or infringe any copyright or other intellectual property right to the artwork of any natural or legal person. Should ESA become aware of an infringement of a copyright or other intellectual property right to the artwork by means of an unauthorized or unlawful distribution, exhibition, or use thereof, then and in any such event, ESA shall take all necessary steps and institute such suits or proceedings it may deem advisable or necessary to prevent such acts and conduct, to secure damages and other relief by reason thereof, and to generally protect ESA’s rights.
Deadlines
The competition’s closing date is 12 noon GMT on 31 December 2018. The Winner shall be notified on 25 January 2019, and the first meeting with the ESA Climate Office will be arranged for early February 2019.
Eligibility
This competition is open to all natural persons who are 18 years or older. Only one entry shall be allowed per artist. Submitters have to be nationals of ESA member states (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom and Canada). Employees and contractors of ESA, as well as their family members are not allowed to submit entries. The artists participating in the competition shall be able to dedicate their time to being an ESA Visiting Artist for three months between February and May 2019 if successful. ESA shall ensure that any personal data of the artists collected or updated are protected in conformity with the level of protection set out in the Personal Data Protection Framework of ESA available on ESA website at the URL: http://www.esa.int/About_Us/Law_at_ESA/Highlights_of_ESA_rules_and_regulations
Commissioning of the winning artwork
The winner of the “Climate from Space” competition shall sign a formal agreement with ESA for the commissioning of the artwork which shall take place during a three-month period (the “Agreement”).
The winner of the “Climate from Space” competition shall receive an award amounting to a gross total of EUR 30,000 to cover all the expenses relating to the creation of the artwork, including any materials, and travel to and accommodation for meetings in the UK as well as the participation at the 2019 Living Planet Symposium in Italy.
The winner of the “Climate from Space” competition shall attend the following meetings:
a. An introductory meeting which shall take place at ECSAT in the first week of the three-month period during which the Agreement will be implemented.
b. The ESA Climate Office Climate Change Initiative Collocation Meeting at St Hugh’s College, Oxford from 26 to 28 March 2019.
c. A progress meeting at ECSAT in April 2019.
d. The ESA Living Planet Symposium in Milan from 13 to 17 May 2019.
The winner of the “Climate from Space” competition will receive payment upon completion of the artwork. Upon request, the winner of the “Climate from Space” competition shall be granted an advance payment of maximum 30% of the Award.
The declaration or payment of any taxes and social security contributions relating to the activities undertaken by the winner under the Agreement are its sole responsibility.
Disclaimer
ESA accepts no responsibility for artwork entries that are lost, damaged, misplaced or overlooked during the procedure for the choice of the winner. ESA accepts no responsibility for any damage, loss, liabilities, injury or disappointment incurred or suffered as a result of entering into the competition. The ESA Climate Office reserves the right to decline any design with inappropriate or offensive content or imagery. By submitting an artwork to the competition, all participant artists authorise ESA to reproduce it, and use it on any media for any purpose to further ESA’s outreach aims and activities. ESA shall make all reasonable efforts to inform the participant artists if it decides to use the artists’ design in the future and shall ensure that name credits are given. ESA’s decision on the winning artwork is final and binding. The artwork produced by the winner during the three-month ESA Visiting Artist period, as well as the competition entries of the two subsequent finalists shall be promoted online and displayed at the 2019 Living Planet Symposium in Milan, Italy.
Miscellaneous
The artists participating in the competition acknowledge and agree to the terms and conditions of the “Climate from Space” competition. Should any participant breach any of the terms and conditions of the “Climate from Space” competition he or she shall be automatically disqualified from participating.
