Discover Matera, a unique and breathtaking ancient town located in the region of Basilicata, north of Puglia. Known as la città sotterranea (“the underground city”), the Sassi and the park of the Rupestrian Churches were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Together they encompass the characteristic cultural features, sites and monuments that underpin the Outstanding Universal Value of the property. This includes the ancient urban centre and the highland plateau on the opposite side of the ravine which show evidence of human settlement for over 2000 years. The Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera represent an outstanding example of a rock-cut settlement, adapted perfectly to its geomorphological setting and ecosystem and exhibiting continuity over more than two millennia.
In 2019, Matera was declared a European Capital of Culture.

The Center for Space Geodesy (CGS) of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), named after the great scientist from Padua Giuseppe “Bepi” Colombo, was built in 1983 on the Murgia Terlecchia in Matera, thanks to the joint effort by the National Space Plan of the National Research Council (which was replaced by the ASI in 1998) and the Basilicata Region. The Center for Space Geodesy is the main ASI operation center.
