FLEX FLuORESCENCE WORKSHOP 2023

19  21 September 2023 | ESA-ESRIN | Frascati (Rome), Italy

Background

This International Workshop follows a series of events addressing remote sensing of vegetation fluorescence. With the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) – Sentinel-3 tandem mission in its implementation phase and fluorescence measurements becoming increasingly available from missions like OCO-2 and Sentinel-5 P, the workshop will focus on latest developments in fluorescence remote sensing.

This includes fluorescence retrievals and atmospheric correction, product validation using ground and airborne instrumentation, and applications covering modeling at different spatial scales and data assimilation. In addition, we encourage contributions related to research and applications over coastal and inland waters.

The International Workshop is open to all scientists and engineers interested in exploring the new observation capabilities and synergies provided by the FLEX and the Sentinel-3 mission.

Objectives

  • Inform the community about recent developments and the status of the FLEX mission
  • Review latest achievement in FLEX data processing, fluorescence and biophysical parameter retrievals, and related uncertainty
  • Plan future activities related to the validation of satellite derived fluorescence estimates
  • Consolidate the link between fluorescence and carbon balance, carbon cycle studies, agriculture, forestry, food security and crop production
  • Provide updates on recent modeling activities coupling remote sensing signals and ecosystem processes
  • Plan future activities related to fluorescence and merged data sets
  • Bring together remote sensing communities focusing on aquatic and terrestrial systems, including data providers, experts and users

Thematic Sessions

  1. FLEX mission status
  2. Fluorescence Retrieval
  3. Data product Validation
  4. Understanding the Carbon and Water Cycles using fluorescence data
  5. Combining observations and models
  6. Long-term fluorescence data sets combining observations from multiple missions
  7. Ecosystem research and stress detection
  8. Aquatic applications for inland waters and coastal zones

Guidelines for authors

Oral Presentation

  • Time slots for the individual presentations will be indicated in the final agenda that will be made available before 25 August.
  • Each presenter shall allocate 5 minutes for Q&A, e.g.: a time slot of 20 minutes corresponds to 15 minutes presentation + 5 minutes Q&A.
  • Please bring your presentation on a USB stick (make a folder if not a single file), name it LastnameSessionname.type (e.g., PresenterSessionA.ppt).
  • At the beginning of the day, when your presentation is scheduled, please go to the regia at the bottom of the meeting room and provide your presentation.
  • Presenters are kindly requested to be present in the meeting room at least 10 minutes prior to the start of the session and to make their presence known to the chair of the session.
  • Presenters are welcomed to use the PPT template for oral presentations, available here.

Poster Presentation

  • Presenters at the poster sessions shall bring their own printed posters. Posters should be mounted on 19 September 2023.
  • Presenters are welcome to use the template for poster presentations, available here.
  • The maximum poster size is A0, Portrait orientation. The poster boards will be 2m high and 1m wide.
  • Authors are strongly encouraged to produce a “proper” full-size poster rather than using multiple smaller (e.g. A4) sheets.
  • Formal poster sessions are held on Tuesday and Wednesday after the end of the presentations, but coffee breaks could also be opportunities to present the posters.

Registration

Registration portal is available here, the deadline to register has been extended to 8 September 2023, 12pm.

Please note there is no registration fee for attending the workshop.
